Sweet Tooth

UPPER NORTH ISLAND, NEW ZEALAND

PHOTOGRAPHED IN 2024

Sweet Tooth was shot on location in Auckland, Waikato, and Otago in Aotearoa New Zealand. Filming for all three seasons took place between 2020 and 2022.

This page details just a few of the locations and what remains of the set at each:

Sal’s Bar
The former real-life Cowboys restaurant at 3360 Ohinewai North Road, Ohinewai doubled as an abandoned bar and ski shack, set somewhere between the fictional settlements of Essex City and Goss Grove in Colorado, USA.

A mock entranceway to the bar was added on the south side of the building and ‘Sal’s Bar’ was painted on. Interior scenes were shot at X3 Studios, Auckland.

Fort Smith Scientific Research
For the labs, the former University of Auckland Tāmaki Innovation Campus’ Health Science building – known as the Population Health Complex – was used for filming the interiors. Specifically, Building 730 (The HUB) at ParkCity, 261-263 Morrin Road in St Johns doubled as the inside of Fort Smith Labs.

Other buildings on the site were also briefly used as exterior settings – for example, the disused ‘UniSat’ satellite receiving station and an in-use Landcare Research genetic laboratory both appear in S1 E3 as a Last Men outpost, as well as a large disused university research centre which also appears as the interior.

Ex-Psychology buildings on the former campus also housed a hospital set.

Exterior shots of the lab were filmed at Manukau Civic Building and its West Annex (both built in 1977), located at 31 Manukau Station Road in Manukau.
